What Are The Treatments for Acne?

Top Product Recommendations

We prepared a separate section for our top product recommendations for acne treatments. These are all items you can buy without prescription and use in the comfort of your own home.

Acne Surgery

You can go to a dermatologist for direct extraction of blackheads and whiteheads. Larger inflamed lesions can either be incised and drained or injected with cortisone which can flatten the lession without the scarring normally associated with cutting.

Free Skin Analysis - click here - Before visiting a doctor for acne surgery, you may want to take a free online skin analysis from an actual physician who can give you a better idea of your skin type and a brief analysis of your current condition.

Face Cleansers

Make sure to regularly clean you skin with a good gentle cleanser. You can try a homemade cleanser for an all-natural solution if it works well for you.

If you prefer tried and true commercial cleansers, we highly recommend these three:

Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser 16 oz

M.D. Forte Glycare Cleanser - Oily Skin 8 oz.

GreatSkin® Ultra Gentle Cleanser 8 oz.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide, in cream form, is applied to acne as both an antibacterial agent and a mild drying and peeling agent.

It is very effective in killing acne bacteria and continues to be one of the most popular acne medications available, prescription or otherwise.

You can apply generous amounts on pimple lesions nightly and leave them on overnight. You can also dab a very thin amount in the morning across your face and leave them on.

Many studies have shown that the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide solution is more effective than the 10% solutions so try to avoid the "maximum strength" formulations. They will have a tendency to over-dry your skin - so not good.

By the way, benzoyl peroxide can dry your skin so using a moisturizer regularly can help you. It also acts as a bleaching agent and can bleach fabric and hair so avoid contact with those surfaces.

Retin-A

Tretinoin-based treatments (like Retin-A) are derivatives of Vitamin A. It removes acne by increasing skin cell turnover, promoting the extrusion of the plugged materials in the hair follicle. They also work for removing early signs of wrinkles, almost appearing like renewing your skin.

Retin-A is applied in a thin layer nightly and will cause drying and flaking of the skin.

Retin-A (tretinoin) is available cheaper from various online pharmacy networks. The merchants below carry them and I encourage to check them out. Make sure you consult your doctor before making any purchase.

Accutane

Accutane is a powerful drug used for treating acne. It works by decreasing the amount of oil produced by the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands. It is not recommended for may patients due to the harsh nature of its formulation.

Many side effects are associated with the drug which is why it needs to be taken with close medical supervision.

Treatment with accutane lasts between 4 to 6 months and its effects can last anywhere from a year to several years.

Accutane can also be bought online with no prescription, although having a doctor on hand is always advised.

Herbal Supplements

There are some herbal supplements designed to help in the treatment of acne. They contain various ingredients like vitamin E, alpha lipolic acid, and hydrolyzed collagen, among others. They can promote healing, limit inflammation, and help control free radicals that can contribute to the infection.

Acnezine is one such supplement and you can find out more about it from the Acnezine website.
